Impact measurement and analysis through SROI

Social Return on Investment is a methodology to measure and analyse the impact. Through this methodology, one organisation will learn about the real changes and effects resulted from the implementation of their services and products and how to maximise the positive impact using the same amount of resources.

If you are willing to understand the impact you have in the community or among your customers/ beneficiaries, how much is unintended, how much negative change your organisation delivers, then SROI methodology could be of assistance.

Some of the questions you will find answers to by using this methodology are:

* What problem are you trying to solve?
* What is your proposed solution to the problem?
* Who experiences changes in their lives as a result of what you do?
* What changes are (or likely to be) experienced?
* How can these changes be measured?
* How much of each change has happened (or is likely to happen)?
* How much of each change is caused by your activities?

Using this methodology will help you identify what you can do to maximise your positive impact utilising the same amount of resource. In addition, where possible, SROI allows for the calculation of a ratio between the investment made in the project and the social value resulted (the SROI ratio).

The SROI analysis, at least for the Greenfield project, was a very useful instrument. We have discovered the real value of the project, and we learned more about the other components: from the insightful stakeholder mapping and their feedback, from the different correlation of the input-output-outcome mix; from the assessment of the final result and the impact on all categories of beneficiaries, whether they are users, management team or other stakeholders. Maybe the most significant lesson learned, at least to us, is the realistic and objective attitude we need to have when writing funding applications, a moment when we need to anticipate the potential impact, the change, even the benefits that seem easier to obtain on paper rather then in reality.
